Following the success of last years’ event, The Deans Marsh Community Cottage is delighted to announce “Run The Marsh” will be held again on Sunday 19th November 2017 at the beautiful Frogwood Arboretum.
The event is designed to bring local and neighbouring communities together in the great outdoors to enjoy the benefits of physical activity. We know that moving our bodies, connecting with nature and each other, strengthens our mental and physical wellbeing.
This year the event will not only see a repeat of the 5km and 2km runs, but will also incorporate the biannual Frogwood Arboretum Open Day. Check in, coffee and warm up activities will once again kick off at The Deans Marsh Cottage at 9am. We will be keeping a tighter schedule this year and expect all runners to be finished by around 11.30am when presentations will take place on site. We hope to see the Deans Marsh School back serving hot soup and bread to participants and spectators.
We then wish to invite all participants & spectators to stay on and enjoy the wonderful surrounds of Frogwood Arboretum. Family activities will kick off from midday. More details to follow.

The Finale of the College of Food Program took place on Saturday 23rd September at the Birregurra Hall. The young people from Birregurra, Forrest and Deans Marsh covered the trestle tables with linen table cloths, the flowers were laid out, the finishing touches were made to the food, places were set, banners hung and menus displayed in preparation for 100 people to enjoy a high tea.
A young person from each of the townships greeted people on arrival. The sponsors were acknowledged, the community mentors and the Coordinators were celebrated. A representative from Give Where You Live attended. Their grant of $30,000 made the program possible. Each young person received a certificate and then it was time to enjoy the amazing food that the young people had prepared.
Many thanks to Katrine Juleff of the Pennyroyal Raspberry Farm for her hard work, knowledge and patience as the Deans Marsh Community Mentor. The young people told me they had a lot of fun, learnt a lot and some are wanting to work in hospitality in the future!
On the 6th September there was a joint site event at the Birregurra Hall. Sam Gant (Bambra local and former Masterchef contestant) demonstrated the preparation of baguettes and crepes with the 30 kids from each of the towns. Sam Gant used the donated produce that the kids have been using in the kitchen from the Sponsors of the program.
The kids have finished the cooking sessions in the kitchen and the finale is this Saturday 23rd September at the Birregurra Hall. This week it was ribbon sandwiches, sponge cake, butter cake and chocolate meringues. Check out the recipes.
The College of Food Program commenced at The Farmers Place in Freshwater on a Saturday. Students learned about food miles and our current globalised food practices by discovering how far the ingredients for a typical pizza have travelled. Exploring the big question… where is my food coming from?
Students were led through the FP garden where they picked produce for a seasonal salad and looked at what is growing now compared to what is currently available in supermarkets.
At noon the much anticipated making of their own gourmet pizzas from locally grown and seasonal ingredients began and the pizzas were cooked by the head chef in a wood fired pizza oven. After the shared lunch, the children were presented with an apron with the B.D.M.F logo by a representative from Give Where You Live to launch the College of Food Program.
The young people meet at the Cottage last week to talk about how they want to work together, to meet Katrine Juleff the Community Mentor (cooking teacher), learn about safety issues in the kitchen and to start thinking about what they want to cook for the Afternoon Tea Finale.
The College of Food kids from Forrest, Birregurra and Deans Marsh attended Lidgerwood Seeds. The young people learnt about different types of wheat and had a first hand instruction/demonstration of the flour mill. Thanks to Don and Rob Lidgerwood for the tour and your sponsorship (donated flour) to the College of Food Program.
There was a joint activity with Birregurra and Forrest held on 2nd August at the Forrest Hall. The activity explored some of the social aspects of food security from a global perspective. The activity covered issues of poverty, inequity, and what it means to live in a food insecure place (Zaatari Refugee Camp in Jordan). The kids participated in a Global Food Banquet which involved an afternoon tea that explored the distribution of food to the world’s population.
The Global Food Banquet showed that food security is having sufficient and diversity of nutritious food to sustain healthy and active life for all people at all time. At the banquet the high income earners ate a variety of food yet they were not able to share their afternoon tea with the middle class (eating beans and rice) or the low income or poor (eating rice only).
