The women of Lorne and surrounding areas are looking forward to a special event to be held in early March 2015 to celebrate International Women’s Day. The theme of this year’s IWD is “Equality for Women is Progress for All”. The event in Lorne has been supported by a grant from the Surf Coast Shire and the Cumberland Resort is generously offering the venue. It will provide the opportunity for women of all ages and walks of life to come together and share a drink and finger food, to chat with old friends, renew past acquaintances, to meet new people from our district, and to watch together an inspiring film produced by the Girl Rising movement.
Girl Rising is a global movement that uses the power of storytelling to share the simple truth that educating girls can transform societies. Girl Rising unites girls, women, boys and men who believe every girl has the right to go to school and the right to reach her full potential.
The film “Girl Rising” journeys around the globe to witness the strength of the human spirit and the power of education to change the world. Viewers get to know nine unforgettable girls living in the developing world: ordinary girls who confront tremendous challenges and overcome nearly impossible odds to pursue their dreams. Prize-winning authors put the girls’ remarkable stories into words, and renowned actors give them voice.
The IWD celebration in Lorne will be held at 5.30 pm on 9th March 2015 at the Cumberland Resort Auditorium in Bay Street, Lorne. It will give women in Lorne an informal chance to discuss the issues surrounding the importance of education for girls in many developing countries. Perhaps we need sometimes to stop to think about and appreciate the many rights we here enjoy in our society, and which we all take for granted, and to come to an understanding about why movements such as Girl Rising are working so hard to improve educational opportunities for girls around the globe. Educating girls can break cycles of poverty in just one generation, yet millions of girls aren’t in school.
While the theme behind IWD is a serious one, the event itself promises to be an enjoyable chance to celebrate the sisterhood, to relish all those things which unify us, but at the same time, to appreciate the wonderful diversity which we all bring to our community. Organisers hope that many women and girls in our area will show an interest and come together on the day and make it a successful gathering. Tickets can be purchased at the Lorne Post Office or Lorne Visitor Information Centre for $20. There will be lucky door prizes drawn after the showing of the film.
